According to history the polydactyl (mitten paw) was one of the characteristics of the Coon Cat. Trips from the house to the barn were more doable in the snowy New England winter with the snowshoe foot. Some sources believe that 40% of the foundation Maine Coon Cats were polydactyl. This characteristic adds width to the front leg as well as increasing the size of the already large foot. In the 1970's this characteristic was breed out so that the cats could be accepted for show status by the various breed associations.
